As neighbors, we’re stronger when we seek common good

The issues we face today are complex and, at times, they can feel overwhelming. But as neighbors and friends, we have a long track record of seeking ways to achieve the common good.

Over the next 25 years and beyond, we must continue to address tough issues and shared challenges together, including educational disparities, economic opportunity, climate change, gaps in the social safety net and the growing isolation experienced by too many of our neighbors. None of these challenges belongs to a single institution, organization or government, and none can be solved alone. Northwestern has both an opportunity and a responsibility to be part of the solution.

We will continue investing in programs that support entrepreneurs building businesses, high school graduates interested in the trades, arts organizations and our most vulnerable older adults.

The University envisions its role as providing more than just economic benefits for Evanston. We see opportunities to create community hubs that provide pathways to education and employment, recreational opportunities for all and healthier neighborhoods.

Projects that are mutually beneficial to our community partners in Evanston and Chicago are essential because they help strengthen the places we call home while serving to advance Northwestern’s mission. Indeed the “win-win” sustains our ability to recruit world-class scholars, researchers and students while attracting a talented work force.

My hope is when we celebrate Northwestern’s bicentennial, we look back with pride on how far we’ve come together, the opportunities we created, the challenges we confronted and the community we built side by side.
